Everyone says that Lord Shiva has two wives{Wife}. But that is wrong.

Goddess Parvati is the only wife of Lord Shiva.

In those days the Ganges did not run on the earth, it flowed like the Ganges in the air{Sky}.

Then King Bhagiratha sought sages to find a way to attain Atma Shanti of his ancestors.

One of the sages who knew the three seasons then

He said that they would be saved if they brought the celestial body to earth and dissolved their bones in it.

Therefore Bhagiratha was adamant towards Mother Ganga to invite Ganga to earth.

The harshness of Bhagiratha Ganga Mata rose before the king. 

Blessed Ganga Devi imposed a condition. If I came to this earth at my own speed this earth would explode and scatter beyond my speed.

So someone who can bear my strength must carry me on his head and bring me to this earth. You do penance towards Shiva of the south. Only Paramahamsha can bear my strength.

Bhagiratha also repented to Lord Shiva and prayed for his thoughts.

Lord Shiva also spread his sadamudi and told the Ganges to descend into it. Ganga, who had reached Lord Shiva, slowed down and descended from Goddess to earth. That is why Ganga resides in the shrine of Lord Shiva.
